The story of Maplecrest Wood Craft begins in 2018 when my wife Sandra and I purchased her family’s property from her grandmother. It was a special time for our family, as we spent that summer cottaging there and cherishing moments with Sandra’s grandmother, who was in her 90s. One day, while exploring the barn that would eventually become my workshop, I stumbled upon a hand-carved wooden sign with the word “Maplecrest” etched into it.

Curious, I asked Sandra’s grandmother about it. She explained that the original owners of the property had called it “Maplecrest,” and the name had stayed with the land through the years. I was struck by the history and legacy behind it. Now, fast forward to 2020. When the time came to name our woodworking business, I knew “Maplecrest” was the perfect choice—a tribute to the property’s past and a symbol of the craftsmanship I aim to carry forward.

The Beginning of Something Special

The idea for Maplecrest Wood Craft came unexpectedly during a home renovation. Sandra and I were updating our bathroom, and as the project neared completion, she mentioned we needed shelves for above the toilet. Like many homeowners, I turned to the internet, only to find shelves that were either outrageously priced or didn’t meet our style. Frustrated but determined, I went out to the barn and made my own.

Woodworking has always been more than a hobby for me—it’s my way of relaxing and finding focus. For years, it was something I enjoyed doing in my spare time, crafting small projects for our home or as gifts for friends and family.

That one project sparked something bigger. Friends and family started noticing the shelves and asking if I could make them for their homes. Before I knew it, orders started coming in, and Maplecrest Wood Craft was born. What began as a small project for our bathroom has grown into a business that I’m proud of, one where I can share my passion for woodworking with others.

Rooted in Haliburton

Although I’m not originally from Haliburton, this community has become home thanks to Sandra, who was born and raised here. Haliburton’s natural beauty and small-town charm are part of what makes this area so special, and it’s something I strive to reflect in my work.

As a high school English teacher, I’m fortunate to be part of a community where I get to connect with people both in and out of the classroom. When I’m not teaching or woodworking, I’m usually spending time with Sandra and our two boys, Shawn and Josh. Whether it’s exploring the trails, relaxing by the lake, or making s’mores around a campfire, we love taking advantage of everything this incredible area has to offer.
